Welcome to the BEd Master of Teaching Program

The BEd Master of Teaching Program is first and foremost based on the practice of inquiry. Inquiry refers to a way of learning that requires of the student to actively question, to conduct research and interpret a wide range of materials. Inquiry is the ability to draw connections between theories and particular experiences and realities, to converse meaningfully with others and to begin to build a defensible understanding and demonstration of teaching practice. It is the ability to practice learning as inquiry that provides, we believe, the strongest foundation for teaching as an ongoing and evolving practice.

While we believe that good teaching practice can be learned, we also believe that it cannot be learned without the student teacher’s active engagement in inquiry. Learning to become a teacher is not simply a process of “knowing what”, but also requires “knowing how.” And knowing how requires a deeper understanding of oneself as a learner, and an understanding of multiple and diverse ways of knowing and action. From this perspective, teaching as a practice is not just received as knowledge, but must be actively enacted and brought into being. --.
